An Introduction to Super Bowl Betting

The grandeur and history of the event, combined with the prestigious halftime show, make the Super Bowl must-watch entertainment every year for millions of people around the world. Acts such as Prince, Michael Jackson, Madonna, The Weeknd, and Lady Gaga have all performed at the Super Bowl halftime show

Of course, where there’s a lot of interest, also means a lot of money to be made. Super Bowl betting is currently as big a part of the game as the players on the field. Bets can include everything from choosing the winning team to who will score first to even what the final score will be.

Regardless of whether you have an interest in gambling on major sports events or if you simply like to make the game more exciting by placing a wager on your favorite team, then check out this introduction to Super Bowl betting.

Overview of the NFL Super Bowl

Since 1967, the Super Bowl has functioned as the National Football League’s (NFL) annual championship game that is played on a Sunday afternoon in February.

The first-ever Super Bowl game took place on January 15, 1967

Irrespective of which Super Bowl teams are involved in the game, the event is held in a different city in the USA each year. This means that, for example, fans of the Kansas City Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers would have to travel to Los Angeles if that was the host city.

The Super Bowl is an interesting sporting event in that it is a single-elimination game, much like the UEFA Champions League soccer final. Unlike other major American leagues such as the NBA, NHL, and MLB, there is no best-of-seven series of championship games. This means that for the two NFL teams playing in the Super Bowl, you either win or go home empty-handed!

Explaining the NFL Super Bowl and Playoffs

As the NFL’s 32 teams are split into two conferences – the National Football Conference (NFC) and American Football Conference (AFC) – the Super Bowl is always a matchup between one team from each conference.

NFL rules

The Super Bowl itself has similar rules like every other game in the NFL season: There are four quarters of 15 minutes, with the clock being paused during every stoppage in play. If the game is tied at the end of the regulation time, then an extra 10 minutes of overtime is played. The teams will keep playing additional 10-minute periods until a winner has been determined.

The Super Bowl teams must move the football up the field a minimum of 10 yards, and if not, the opposing team gets the ball and attempts to do the same. The objective is to place the football over the end zone for six points.

Players can either run over the end zone line or throw to a player who will catch the ball while positioned in the end zone. These six points are called a touchdown.

After a team has scored a touchdown, they can earn either an additional point by kicking a field goal or attempting a two-point conversion by positioning the players near the end zone for another touchdown.

A touchdown isn’t the only way to score, however, as a team can kick the football for a field goal if they are too far from the end zone. This field goal is worth three points.

The NFL playoffs

When the regular NFL season ends, the playoffs begin. 14 teams – seven from each conference – will play single-elimination games until one team remains from each conference. These will be the Super Bowl teams and will face off against each other in the championship game.

There are four rounds in the NFL playoffs: The Wild Card round (the top two teams in each conference are allowed to skip this round and wait for their opponent), divisional round, conference championships, and then finally the Super Bowl after the playoffs.

How Super Bowl Betting Works

The Super Bowl is one of the best times of the year to make a wager. Many NFL fanatics enjoy making the Super Bowl a little more interesting by placing a bet before the game.

It sometimes even helps to be a newbie to the Super Bowl and simply bet with your gut, as gambling professionals can often overthink situations and get the outcome completely wrong!

The number of people betting on the Super Bowl

In the USA alone, close to 25 million people take part in Super Bowl betting each year. In fact, it was revealed that Americans wagered over $136 million on the Super Bowl in 2021. Compare this to 1991, when a mere $40 million was spent on Super Bowl bets.

Why the Super Bowl generates so much interest

It would be fair to say that the NFL Super Bowl is not just a game, but a real extravaganza, too. Super Bowl Sunday, as it’s known, is practically an unofficial holiday in the United States.

Thousands of bars, restaurants, public viewing areas, and even parties at home are packed with everyone wanting to soak up the Super Bowl entertainment.

As the Super Bowl is a single-elimination matchup, there’s always so pressure much riding on the game because you know there isn’t a second chance on another day.

The championship game is already a big deal itself, but even those people who don’t care about the sport will still enjoy the spectacle of it all, including the pre-game entertainment, the halftime show, and even the commercials and trailers.

The different ways you can make a Super Bowl bet

There are dozens of physical stores and even online bookmakers these days where you can make a bet. If you live in the USA, this might depend on whether sports betting is legal in your state. This guide will tell you if physical betting or if online betting for sports is legal where you live.

After the conference championships have been played and the two teams have been decided for the Super Bowl, then oddsmakers will begin to set the betting lines. This means fans can begin making Super Bowl bets and test their luck when the big game finally arrives in February.

So, what can you bet on with regards to the Super Bowl? It’s not only possible to choose which team you believe will win the game, but also much more. You can also bet on what the score will be or who will be the Most Valuable Player (MVP).

Very specific events are known as “prop” bets, such as which player will score the initial touchdown, who will catch the first interception, etc.

Typical bets for the NFL Super Bowl

These are some of the terms you’ll hear when making a Super Bowl bet.

Point spread – The point spread, or sometimes point line, is essentially the margin of victory of the Super Bowl. The way it works follows like this: The Super Bowl team marked as the favorite will have a negative symbol (-) in front of a number, while the underdog team will have a plus symbol (+).

Let’s say the Chiefs are the favored team at -6, then six points will be taken away from the score they make in the real game. So, 36 points will become 30. If these 30 points are still more than the opposing team’s real score, then the person making the bet will win if they chose this outcome.

Conversely, if the 49ers are looking like the underdog team at +3, then three points are added to the team’s real score at the end of the game. If this final total places the 49ers ahead of the Chiefs, then the bettor can win on this outcome if it’s selected, too.

Money line – This option involves a little less math than the previous one. There is still plus and minus involved, but it’s simpler.

We can pretend again that the Chiefs are the favorite to win the game at -160 and then the 49ers are the underdog at +140. This means if you’ll bet at least $160 on the Chiefs and they win, you’ll earn $100. On the other hand, betting $100 on the 49ers to win will give you $140.

Over/under – The store or website where you’re making a bet will determine the over/under of the Super Bowl result. To explain this type of bet, we’ll use another example.

If the over/under of the Super Bowl is set at 41 points, then you can either bet if the combined scores of both teams will exceed or be underneath 41 points. If you think the Chiefs will score 20 points and the 49ers get 10, then the combined total is 30 points, which means you should bet the “under.” If you believe the combined score will be 45, then bet the “over.”

In the end, Super Bowl betting should simply be about having fun while watching a great game! Hopefully it’s enjoyable and profitable as well.
